A short story by Brandon Case called “Eight Legs of the Mother Hunted” is about the perilous life of a spider, especially as a mother. In my personal opinion, spiders are exquisite and essential towards the environment. Therefore, the terror of those who do not appreciate the presence of this creature; will only lead to unjustified hatred toward this arachnid. Additionally, could only lead to greater destruction towards the enemy who will forever remain oblivious.
The unfavorable outward appearance of spiders are feared by most, who are naive to the true beauty within these creatures. Notorious hatred of those seek destruction and execution, the narrator states “[t]o defend, I attack. I swing my shattered legs. Too broken, they rip from my body and roll like black logs…We must escape…Across broken shale, I shove slowly forward, skrom-skrum-skom” (Case). The treacherous life of a spider will become far greater once entering motherhood, as the loathsome of those who strive for liquidation of the life of this creature and its offspring. The narrator states, “[y]ou cannot have my body. You cannot have the corpses of my babies, borne within me once more” (Case). Another thing on which to take note in, spider silk has numerous valuable qualities towards humanity. In addition, those who become engrossed by value this precious material; will ultimately become gluttonous to his or her own desires.
Overall, the ignorance and fear of those who are naive; will become driven by his or her own hatred towards this creature. Faithfully, the world is also filled with those who have love and compassion towards the creature (Myself included). Therefore, there is still hope for lovely souls. As it often pulls from literature, being well read also allows one to better appreciate various forms of entertainment. Reading a book that others also read or have read is means of social connection. Unfortunately, in today’s world, our time is limited. So many demands are placed upon our time, we often don't have the leisure time required to become fully engrossed in a lengthy novel. Despite this, there is a solution: mini books. (I, a lover of all things miniature, am intrigued by this concept.) "Mini books are designed to be consumed in one or two sittings, which is exactly what today’s busy readers love” (Thompson).
